![]() If I am lucky, after two posts some of you are saying “I’m glad to have that groundwork laid.” If I am luckier still, some others are also saying “This guy is way too basic.” Either way, I want your new or existing understanding of CAD design/drafting with Vectorworks to be grounded on a solid base. I think finding a good level of using the shortcuts for your most common operations will lead to a familiarity and comfort with Vectorworks that will make your day more enjoyable and productive. I want people to learn to be lazy, especially with Vectorworks. A parallel I’ve noticed: I’m not the fastest swimmer in the pool, but of the swimmers of my speed, I move with fewer strokes than most to swim that same speed. Drill yourself.Īnother generalization about CAD is to judge productivity level by the virtual count of mouse and key operations by the end of the day. When concentrating on a new shortcut to (re)learn at any time, consider looking it up on VW_Keyboard or mousing over it to learn the key combination and then key it in rather than use the mouse, even though the mouse is already there. You can find the free mapping utility that I created, VW_Keyboard, on the Freebies page of my website. I suggest that you consider mapping your shortcuts to a keyboard diagram and keep it handy for reference. This is actually fairly difficult to create and keep track of, so I have developed a tool to get the computer to do it for me (and you). (Also remember that you can get more description by pressing the control or command key while mousing over.) Always remember that you can see the shortcut for tools and commands when you mouse over them. We did a quick overview of the Snapping Palette and we will return to it. ![]() If you are not using keyboard shortcuts, you are not working up to full potential. If you are not using snaps, it’s not CAD. ![]() Maybe they are over-generalizations, but I don’t think so. Here are a couple of generalizations about CAD. Having a shortcut to it just helps tremendously. It maintains your current set of objects selected. Using the Tape Measure Tool has an advantage over some alternatives of getting a length on the fly. The Dims/Notes Tool Set is not always visible unless you have it torn off and placed in your workspace. The tool is on the Dims/Notes Tool Set and is extremely valuable for all users, but I know it just makes intuitive good sense for anyone who has spent a lot of time with a tape measure on the hip. I want to show how to create a Keyboard Shortcut for the Tape Measure Tool.
